Why are teeth whitening products obtained from the dental office better than those I can buy at the drug store?
Dental office-dispensed and over-the-counter teeth whitening products are actually the same chemicals, a form of hydrogen peroxide. The difference between them is primarily their strength, the concentration of the active ingredient. The stronger the concentration, the faster the desired whitening effect is achieved. However, the stronger the concentration, the greater is the possibility of whitening's main side effect, teeth hypersensitivity. Fortunately, many dental office-dispensed whitening products have added desensitizing agents in recent years. Our office also makes for our patients a custom-fitted tray to hold the product to the teeth, which helps apply the product more uniformly to the teeth than most over-the-counter delivery systems.
